Information is Free. Knowledge is Not. – Ian Lurie
For over thirty years as a clinical dentist and dental educator I explored and developed methods to restore the physiological form, structure, and function of the stomatognathic system of patients who were suffering from some type of complex multifactorial disorder with it. That meant stepping outside of the box of what was generally practiced by dentists in America and Canada during that time. Unfortunately, I wasn’t taught how to comprehensively analyze the condition of the stomatognathic system or care for patients who had problems with it. It wasn’t part of the curriculum at the dental school I attended. I learned later from my experiences in clinical practice providing what I knew to restore the physiological function of patients’ stomatognathic system by restoring the form, alignment, and structure to the craniofacial bones and muscles, temporomandibular joints, and teeth. This approach to treatment meant change. A change to the way I perceived the structure, alignment, arrangement, position, and function of the components of patients’ stomatognathic system. It also meant change to the methods I needed to use to examine, test, analyze, diagnose, and treat patients’ disorders, thus a change from providing traditional basic dental care to providing more comprehensive patient care. It was also a change to the way I perceived the condition of my patients’ disorders, from one of them having simple conditions only involving components of their oral cavity and teeth to having complex conditions involving components of their entire cranio-maxillomandibular-cervical-dental system. I also discovered there were many patients who were unaware that they had a complex disorder during the time they were under the care of dentists or other healthcare practitioners. If, in fact, they had a complex disorder and only received a basic examination and analysis, in many cases the dentists and the others failed to determine a definitive diagnosis and ultimately provided inappropriate treatment. I believe analyzing and treating their stomatognathic system comprehensively would have prevented these unfortunate situations.
This book outlines various methods and systems that clinical dentists can use to effectively operate a dental healthcare business that cares for patients who have complex multifactorial disorders involving the stomatognathic system. It is 280 pages long, contains numerous illustrations, and is divided into several sections with a bibliography of 72 references. It uses edentulous patients as an example of people who have complex multifactorial disorders involving components of their stomatognathic system. It describes how to effectively care for them from the time they contact a clinical dental practice until they return for their recall appointments months after treatment has been completed.
